HOPE Cape Town Internships

Information for voluntary work, medical internships

Volunteers and Interns:
HOPE Cape Town would not be where it is today had it not been for the help of countless local and international volunteers. These committed individuals have assisted with the care and entertainment of patients on the Ithemba Ward for Infectious Diseases, Community Health Worker training, fundraising, marketing, event coordination, updating the HOPE Cape Town website and project evaluation, amongst other things.

Due to limited space and staff capacity, we can unfortunately only accommodate a maximum of three volunteers at a time. Two places are permanently taken for one year by our Weltwaerts volunteers. Young people can apply for a position with the DED (German Development Service). For more information about the Weltwaerts volunteer programme:
http://www.weltwaerts.de.

Apart from Weltwaerts, HOPE Cape Town will consider applications from both, local and international volunteers, who would like to help us make a difference in the fight against HIV and AIDS in underprivileged communities around Cape Town. Proposals for new projects will be considered if appropriate and feasible. All volunteers and interns have to commit themselves for a period of at least three months. Places are rare and sought-after, so applications should be made at least one year in advance.  Unfortunately, HOPE Cape Town cannot assist with accommodation and transport, and no remuneration can be paid to volunteers.

Please contact us at

HOPE Cape Town - KID-CRU Medical Elective Student Programme
Since 2008, HOPE Cape Town has been running a combined clinical and research elective for international medical students in partnership with KID-CRU (Children’s Infectious Diseases Clinical Research) and the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Stellenbosch. The elective with HOPE Cape Town provides in-depth exposure to the operation of an independent NGO focused on service and support at the primary health care level while KID-CRU offers a detailed introduction to the management, administration and finances of a major research unit. Both entities operate successfully within the health structures of the Province of the Western Cape. For more information about KID-CRU, please visit their website: http://www.kidcru.org.za

Participants in this elective with KID-CRU will learn about the challenges faced in maintaining a research unit and the need to provide appropriate services to the public accessing primary and tertiary health care systems.
